Reading

Intent

We want our pupils to be able to decode independently as soon as possible.  Due to our high numbers of pupils with English as an additional language (EAL), we believe that this is a key skill and will enable our pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of language which will enable them to comprehend more deeply.

We intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live and to establish an appreciation and love of reading that they enjoy talking about.  We want our pupils to gain knowledge across the curriculum. It is our intention to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education.

We want our pupils to develop a passion for reading for life and enjoy getting lost in books.

What do we want for our pupils?

We want our pupils to:

  • be immersed in text
  • read high quality texts daily
  • be motivated readers
  • be resilient and use skills to work out unknown words
  • enjoy stories and language
  • be able to talk about texts read or listened to enthusiastically
  • have access to a wide breadth of texts
  • engage with books in the home setting
  • be able to gain knowledge from texts to deepen their understanding of the world around them
  • listen to an adult read to them at school every day
  • be able to navigate non-fiction texts (digital/hard copy) to find facts
  • be members of the local library
  • know how a library works
  • leave STM able to access the KS3 curriculum
