Prayer and Liturgy
Growing together in faith, prayer and love
At St Thomas More, prayer and liturgy are an important part of our school family. They help our children to grow closer to God, listen to His Word and live out our Catholic values in the way we treat others.
Prayer and liturgy happen throughout the week and are woven into everyday school life. Every child, whatever their age, ability or faith background, is encouraged and supported to take part.
Prayer is not just about words. We want our children to put their faith into action.
Throughout the year, children have opportunities to:
-
take part in CAFOD activities, including the Big Lent Walk
-
participate in the Stations of the Cross
-
celebrate Mary's Month
-
become Mini Vinnies
-
serve as Junior Chaplains
-
learn about and put into practice Catholic Social Teaching
-
welcome our Parish Priest and develop links with our parish community.
As children move through the school, they learn a range of traditional Catholic prayers, as well as prayers connected to Catholic Social Teaching.
Children begin with prayers such as the Sign of the Cross, Morning Prayer and Grace, before progressing to prayers including the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Apostles' Creed, Rosary, Magnificat and Acts of Faith, Hope and Love.
How can families support prayer at home?
You don't need to be an expert to pray with your child. Simple moments can make a big difference:
Pray together – before meals, at bedtime or before a special event.
Read the Sunday Gospel – talk together about what Jesus might be saying to us. This is shared in our school's weekly newsletter.
Make time for quiet – encourage your child to be still and think about what they are thankful for.
Put faith into action – look for ways to show kindness, forgive others, help someone in need and care for God's creation.
