At St Thomas More, Religious Education (RE) is a central part of school life. We want every child to develop
their understanding of the Catholic faith, grow in their relationship with God and discover how Jesus's teachings
can guide the way they live.


Our RE is rooted in our school mission: Aspire and Flourish


What do children learn in RE?


Our RE curriculum follows the Religious Education Directory (RED) for Catholic Schools, which provides the
foundation for our programme of study. RE is given 10% of curriculum time, reflecting its importance within
our Catholic school.


Children learn about:

  • The Catholic faith. The life and teachings of Jesus, Scripture, prayer, the Church and the Sacraments.
  • The Bible. Children explore Scripture and consider how God's Word connects with their own lives and experiences.
  • Living out our faith. Children explore Gospel values such as love, forgiveness, respect, care and service and consider how they can put these values into action.
  • Other faiths and world-views. Children develop respect and understanding by learning about other Christian denominations, Judaism, Islam, Dharmic religions and other religious and non-religious world-views. There is a dedicated period of study of other faiths, religions and world-views during the summer term.
  • The Sacraments are explored throughout the RE curriculum at an age-appropriate level. Children are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion through the parish in which they live. School and parish work together to support children's faith journeys.

How can parents support RE at home?


You can support your child's RE learning by:


Reading the Bible together and talking about the stories.
Praying together and encouraging your child to share their own prayers.
Talking about faith and encouraging your child to ask questions.
Living out Gospel values through kindness, forgiveness, respect and service.
Taking part in Mass and parish life together where possible.
Talking about other faiths and cultures with openness, respect and curiosity.
